With no straight cabernet this vintage, this ends up as 70/30% cabernet/malbec. While shiraz and malbec are good friends, cabernet and malbec are lovers. This is the wine that smells of Wendouree: the bush, the winery and the vineyards resplendent with gnarly centenarian and 'younger' vines. Plush, ripe fruit, all currant and blackberry accented, perfumed with aniseed, wild herbs and dark chocolate studded with mint. Lovely tannins and time on its side. If you can wait. Wendouree

Wendouree is one of Australia’s most revered and historically significant wineries, established in the Clare Valley of South Australia in 1893 by Alfred Percy Birks and later acquired in 1974 by custodians Tony and Lita Brady, who have maintained its traditional approach for decades. The estate’s dry‑grown, very old vineyards—including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Mataro—produce exceptionally concentrated, age‑worthy red wines in extremely limited quantities that are primarily offered to a dedicated mailing list rather than through a cellar door. With its original stone winery still largely intact and a cult reputation among collectors for wines of depth, structure and regional expression, Wendouree stands as a treasured piece of Australian wine heritage.
