Two parcels, one in McLaren Flat and the other Koomilya, Upper Tintara, two weeks on skins; matured in French oak puncheons. Black cherry, blackberry pastille, cherry cola, black jellybean, all sans confection, chinotto, leather, panforte spicing, scrubby herbs, a hint of violet or the like, the palate dutifully structured with classic tapas- beckoning tannins. It’s got a bit of intensity, presence, though it’s not big by any stretch. Very nice. Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion

The only surprising piece of background is that it took (an admittedly still reasonably youthful) Steve Pannell and wife Fiona so long to cut from Constellation/Hardys and establish their own winemaking and consulting business. Steve radiates intensity and his extended experience has resulted in wines of the highest quality, right from the first vintage. The Pannells have 2 vineyards in McLaren Vale, the first planted in 1891 with a precious 3.6ha of shiraz. The future for the Pannells is limitless, the icon status of the label already well established. -JAMES HALLIDAY
