The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a more intense bouquet than the Ruchottes with blood- orange-infused red fruit, exquisite definition and supreme focus. The palate is medium-bodied with finely sculpted tannins, a little spicier than Rousseau's other cuvées, with fine weight toward the finish. Touches of black pepper and dark chocolate linger temptingly. Superb. Drink 2028-2052. 95-97PTS Neal Martin, Vinous

A much denser purple. Coming after the Ruchottes, the Clos St-Jacques is like chalk and cheese, yet these are two great wines. This is much more structured, and while the fruit at the front of the palate is impressive enough, there arrives a wealth of darker berries behind, but no feeling of heat. Drink 2032-2040. 95-97PTS Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound Outstanding ♥ - Ripe and exceptionally fresh aromas of poached plum, violet, wood toast and spice give way to gorgeously textured, sappy and impressively powerful larger-bodied flavors that exhibit simply stunning length on the balanced and only moderately austere finale. This is seriously good though quite firm and in contrast to several of the prior wines, one that's going to need at least a decade of keeping first. Drink 2040+. 93-96PTS Allen Meadows, Burghound

Producer

Armand Rousseau

“Domaine Armand Rousseau is revered as one of the grand old domaines of Burgundy, resplendent with 14 hectares (half Grand Crus) and noble old vines. This is one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines any way you want to look at it – in history, in holdings and in quality of wine. It used to be said that the three ‘special’ wines, Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze and Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques were among the greatest in Burgundy, but that the rest of the stable was relatively unexciting. In recent years there seems to be a much greater consistency of quality across the range. Though Eric’s influence is evident in this respect, the actual style of the wines has changed not a jot from the previous generation.” JASPER MORRIS MW
