The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which is a mix of Mazoyères and Charmes, has a delightful bouquet that needed little encouragement from the glass, with heavenly aromas of raspberry, crushed strawberry, ground stone verging on slate, perhaps more Mazoyères than Charmes (which is no surprise given that two-thirds of the vines are from that side of the grand cru). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and crisp acidity, maybe needing a little more substance to develop with time. I am sure it will. Drink 2021-2045. 93-95 points Neal Martin

Elegant and dense, with cherry, iron, stone and spice flavors fused to firm, dusty tannins. The fruit is locked up tight, revealing potential on the long, fruit- and spice-filled aftertaste. Drink 2023-2042. 95 points Bruce Sanderson, Decanter

This is one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines any way you want to look at it – in history, in holdings and in quality of wine. It used to be said that the three ‘special’ wines, Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze and Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques were among the greatest in Burgundy, but that the rest of the stable was relatively unexciting. In recent years there seems to be a much greater consistency of quality across the range.
