TASTING_NOTES_HEADING_BLACK

Firm and finely balanced, this deeply flavoured but elegant wine is set for the long term. Underpinned by suggestions of minerals and graphite, its deep, dark bouquet of blackberries, cassis, dark plums and cedary oak reveals nuances of chocolate and iodide. ItÕs long and smooth, with a firm, drying spine of powdery tannins supporting concentrated dark fruit flavours and tight-knit oak. A typical long term classic from this great vineyard. Jeremy Oliver

Producer

Balgownie Estate

Founded in 1969 by pharmacist-turned-winemaker Stuart Anderson, Balgownie Estate began with the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in the Bendigo region of Victoria, helping revive commercial winemaking in the area after more than 80 years. Anderson’s passion for classic French wine styles shaped Balgownie’s reputation for rich, savoury wines with excellent cellaring potential. In 1999, wine enthusiasts Des Forrester and Rod Forrester acquired the estate, revitalising the vineyards and expanding into the Yarra Valley where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive in the cool climate. Today, under the guidance of chief winemaker Tony Winspear, Balgownie continues to produce award-winning wines that reflect more than five decades of heritage, innovation and a strong sense of place.
