71% Gewurztraminer, 27% Riesling and 2% Sauvignon Blanc from SC Pannell's Protero label. A Cypriot inspired delight, with angelic aromas of lychee, ginger flower, sherbet, dusty rose and lemongrass spice. The palate is an engaging ambrosia of rose water, fresh buns and an uplifting citrus spine that carries into a long, slippery finish.

Wise, exotic and delightful aromas. A drier version of our favourite wine to drink with spicy food. Lychee, ginger flower, pink musk, rose oil and lemongrass – a cloud of exotic perfume hypnotises the senses yet again. The flavour is engaging and uplifting. Cypriot delight, rose water and almond croissant, held together by a lime juice spine before a nervy finish that is grassy, long, and deeply refreshing. The texture is less Aphrodite, more Athena. – Stephen Pannell

The only surprising piece of background is that it took (an admittedly still reasonably youthful) Steve Pannell and wife Fiona so long to cut from Constellation/ Hardys and establish their own winemaking and consulting business. Steve radiates intensity and his extended experience has resulted in wines of the highest quality, right from the first vintage. The Pannells have 2 vineyards in McLaren Vale, the first planted in 1891 with a precious 3.6ha of shiraz. The future for the Pannells is limitless, the icon status of the label already well established. -JAMES HALLIDAY
