Medium-full red with a good tint of purple; the wine is medium bodied and firm with a good spine of tight tannins very nebbiolo the bouquet raspberry, redcurrant, aniseed/spice and subtly earthy, with hints of graphite and rusty iron. The tannins are fine and balanced yet assertive, and will help it go superbly with protein-rich foods. Lovely wine and typical of the grape. Huon Hooke

The only surprising piece of background is that it took (an admittedly still reasonably youthful) Steve Pannell and wife Fiona so long to cut from Constellation/ Hardys and establish their own winemaking and consulting business. Steve radiates intensity and his extended experience has resulted in wines of the highest quality, right from the first vintage. The Pannells have 2 vineyards in McLaren Vale, the first planted in 1891 with a precious 3.6ha of shiraz. The future for the Pannells is limitless, the icon status of the label already well established. -JAMES HALLIDAY
