70% Pinot Noir from Verzenay & Verzy, 30% Chardonnay from Chouilly. Just over four years on lees, and a dosage of 9g/l. 2012 was an excellent vintage for Louis Roederer (such a shame there wasn’t a Blanc de Blancs). Ripe-pear with a coating of tangy lemon-balm. The small amount of oak fermented wine gives some tension (and a hint of tannin on the finish), enhancing the impression of minerality. Long and well balance despite the obvious ripeness. This will age with finesse. An excellent, complex, intense wine! ***5 STARS** 97 points Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Just over two-thirds pinot noir (Verzenay) and the balance southeast-facing chardonnay from Chouilly. This has 30% of oak fermentation which has compressed the wine, lending it an air of extreme concentration. The nose is gently spicy, offering peaches and cherries as well as neat autolysis edge. The palate has a powerful, long and assertive feel, with peach and lemon pith, chalky minerals, and some grapefruit. A powerful vintage for Roederer. 96 points James Suckling

Louis Roederer

Louis Roederer remains one of the last 100% independent, family-owned Champagne Houses, presided over by seventh generation Frédéric Rouzaud. Under the stewardship of Chef du Cave, Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon these past two decades, Louis Roederer has become the largest Biodynamic Domaine in Champagne with their 242 hectares located in the three most important sub-regions: Montagne de Reims (La Montagne); Vallée de la Marne (La Rivière) and Côtes des Blancs (La Côte). In March 2021, following 20 years of environmental transition, 115 hectares of the historic Louis Roederer family vineyard achieved organic certification. Inherited by Louis Roederer in 1834, already in 1845 the House acquired Grand Cru vineyards in Verzy and Verzenay (Montagne de Reims), with the idea to become a wine grower in order to master the entire process of creating wines. The quest for a diversity of terroirs, crus, parcels, and grape varieties was gradually integrated by the House, unique in Champagne today, owning a minimum of 70% of their total needs. In mid-2021 Louis Roederer made the brave and audacious move to replace Brut Premier, created in 1986 by Frédéric’s father Jean-Claude, with a new multi-vintage cuvée, Collection. Largely in response to climate change and riper fruit, and matched by a desire to move towards the best possible blend in any given edition rather than retaining consistency of House style above all else, each Collection has its own identity.
