The 2022 Riesling Niersteiner Hipping Grosses Gewächs opens with petrichor and lemon, adding iron oxide and potentilla with more air. A touch of Navel orange emerges with even more air. The palate has a zesty edge of grapefruit, a harmonious balance and a distinct but pleasant phenolic bitterness that makes the mouth water. Real pithiness shapes the mid-palate and adds much mouthfeel but no fat. This has body, energy and power but also elegance. (Bone-dry) Drink 2025-2045. 94 points Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

From 40+-year-old vines, the 2022 Hipping Riesling GG opens with a deep, refined and elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe fruits intertwined with yellow blossoming florals, lime aromas and some herbal and darker-toned iodine notes. Round, savory and fresh on the palate, this is a pure, very elegant, utterly mineral but also juicy, intense and finely structured Riesling with a long and aromatic finish and remarkably fine, mineral acidity. The 2022 already tastes very well and can be enjoyed even that early. Drink 2023-2043. 93+ points Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach has well and truly hit his stride after taking the winemaking reins from his late father Fritz a few years back. Warm, charming, modest and brilliant Fritz Hasselbach, who passed away from illness in October 2016, was the man who lifted the estate into the Rheinhessen's topflight. Johannes and the team are taking it even further, turning out stunning wines from top-rated vineyards of the Roter Hang, a steep hill of red slate overlooking the Rhine. The dry Rieslings are intensely concentrated and expressive of the red volcanic soil. Attention to detail drives everything that happens at Gunderloch and the Hasselbach family’s intimate knowledge of the Roter Hang shines through in the wines. They are wines that ripple with energy, that are thought provoking and profound, that expertly exhibit the sites in which they are grown, but more importantly, are a pure joy to drink.
