TASTING_NOTES_HEADING_BLACK

Dedicated to Nello Baricci who founded the small estate in 1955, the 2019 Riserva Nello is compelling, starting with its enticing aromas of underbrush, pressed violet, camphor and ripe dark-skinned berry. Smooth and elegantly structured, the delicious palate has layers of flavors including juicy black cherry, raspberry, licorice and mocha set against a backbone of refined, close-grained tannins. Showing the nature of the vintage, it’s still youthfully austere, with vibrant acidity. It’s already gorgeous but give it time to fully develop. Drink 2029–2044. 98 Points, Kerin O’Keefe

Made from a selection of bunches within the estate’s oldest vineyard on the hill of Montosoli, Nello sees long ageing in tonneaux. It is a stunning fusion of freshness and maturity, with an enigmatic timeless quality. Cacao melds with wet autumn leaves and stony minerals, and its red and black currants are steeped in irresistible Christmas spice. There is dried rose, cedar, plush plum and more. The structural vortex is equally thrilling, and it vibrates with tension and radiates sophistication. Intricately woven tannins grip persuasively, and the finish simply doesn’t let up. Exemplary Riserva. 98 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter.com

Producer

Baricci Montosoli

Baricci is a benchmark grower-producer of Brunello di Montalcino, and a name tied closely to Montosoli, widely regarded as the region’s grand cru site. The estate traces its origins back to the 1950s, when Nello Baricci purchased vineyards on the Montosoli hill and, in doing so, became among the earliest growers to recognise the site’s potential for expressive Sangiovese. He was also a founding member of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, in fact, Nello's is the very first signature on the registration documents to record his estate in the appellation. Nello's decades-long pursuit in the vineyard and winery was pivotal in shaping the appellation as we know it today. To this day, Baricci remains one of the smallest and most site-focused producers in the Montalcino zone. It's a light-year away from the trend of big investor-syndicate projects in Montalcino.
