Joseph Drouhin Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2019

The name Drouhin is like royalty, not that the Drouhins were ever kings or queens of Burgundy. Instead of ruling they innovated and built an empire of vineyards in Burgundy and even a colony in Oregon. In 1952, the vineyards were under the stewardship of Maurice Drouhin, two generations removed from the current proprietors of this high quality firm. Charmes-Chambertin lies directly below Le Chambertin and shares the same soil type, small pebbles and brownish earth. Entirely planted to pinot noir fin and farmed without the use of fertilizers or weed killers, the fruit for this wine is hand-picked and fermented in open wood vats. The resulting wines glint like gemstones in a glass with a nose where cherry aromas dominate. Subtler notes of wood and spice come out as the wine opens up. On the palate the wine is beautifully balanced and silky, leaving impressions of candied cherry, exotic wood barks and refined spices, with a lengthy, persistent finish.
