FOREST MARIE TRADITION BRUT NV

For this Forest-Marié Brut Tradition NV, nine generations and two families merge with an astounding 86 plots over a handful of Champagne’s villages, all tended to by the family-run estate. It’s a blend of all three Champagne grapes, with 58% reserve wine in the blend, delivering aromatic pear, citrus and shortbread, tart red cranberries and freshness at every turn.

BABO PINOT GRIGIO 2022

Pinot Grigio from Friuli generally has more fleshy layers than, say, those from Veneto and Trentino, a feature Justin underscores by allowing eight hours of skin contact in the press. Fermentation is in steel tanks, and the wine remains on lees for eight months before bottling. A far cry from the one-dimensional wines that crowd the market, it’s crisp, fresh, compact and bright, awash with bell- clear flavours of orchard fruit, flower and pithy citrus, lovely texture and a mouth-watering, tangy close. A quality example of Italian Pinot Grigio at a heck of a price.

BROKENWOOD ROSATO 2023

This is a sophisticated bone-dry rosé, predicated on using sangiovese and nebbiolo to give the wine an inherent savouriness, depth and length of flavour. The palate belies the simplicity of its pale-pink appearance, delivering a cleansing yet satisfying experience with subtle red berry fruit kissed by lemon sherbert and watermelon. The fruit was partially crushed by foot-stomping, then the juice and skins steeped overnight then pressed. Most of the juice was fermented stainless steel, with a small portion in old oak.
