New Zealand's Greatest Winery!

This week we hosted an event tasting the latest, and according to wine scribe Huon Hooke, the greatest Te Mata Coleraine ever made. Hefty 100pt scores have been bestowed upon both the 2020 and 2021 Coleraine in recent years from NZ’s Sam Kim, however few critics have the reputation and gravitas of Huon Hooke. Huon has raised the Coleraine ‘accolade bar’ to a whopping 99pt score for the current release 2022. This is a truly magnificent vintage for both reds and whites with the 2022 Te Mata Elston Chardonnay also ranked best ever by Hooke.
Te Mata has always shown consistent quality of the Coleraine and Awatea (or baby Coleraine) Cabernet Merlot wines, the Bullnose Syrah (99pts) and the Elston Chardonnay. Having recently visited the winery and tasted through the range it was clear that there’s so much more to Te Mata than Coleraine with a range of wines and price points to suit all enthusiasts. High on the deliciousness scale is the 2023 Gamay Noir ($27)…a standout if you’re chasing perfume, texture and sheer slurpability! In the Showcase range the 2022 Te Mata Awatea is pure class, showing all the hallmarks of ready-to-drink Cabernet and @ $47/btl truly overdelivers. The range wouldn’t be complete without a white (or two) and it’s the premium chardonnay that’s the pinnacle! The 2022 Te Mata Elston Chardonnay is a winner for all chardonnay drinkers. Just enough wood and nutty croissant creaminess yet offers crisp stonefruit acidity. When is Sauvignon Blanc not what we all know it to be? When it’s been barrel fermented. The 2022 Te Mata Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc shows juicy pear, ripe grapefruit, citrus blossom, subtle char and fennel notes…delicious!
