A great, cool vintage, yes, with both depth and levity, but Pete Fraser’s quarter turns of the screw are also palpable. Fruits are red and black, ripe but with some tart wild tension, dusted in heady baharat spicing, the heartbeat of old-vine power pulsing insistently within. More so, indeed, than most – from powerfully dark, meaty and structured (notably on rolled pebbles over clay) through to Pinot-like finesse and grace (on quartz or granite sands). When you pour this wine, its dark hue may suggest that it’s an example of the former style. The 2022 Sunrise Grenache marks the inaugural release of this wine. Steve Pannell pruned the vineyard himself before purchasing it in 2021. The wine here is silky and seamless, packed with tannin, flavor and perfume. “I didn’t make it any differently [than the other Grenaches]; I’ve just let the vineyard sing,” he said. And sing, it does. This is a wholly complex, complete and persistently long wine. There are notes of Boscobel rose, sweet licorice, graphite, ironstone and tobacco. What a wine. In terms of character, this combines the texture and complexity of the Smart vineyard and the ethereal spice and delicacy of the Little Branch and then raises the bar of both to a whole new level. The release of this Sunrise Grenache marks the arrival of an “off-leash Pannell”; he has been tirelessly championing premium Grenache from McLaren Vale for years in his own oeuvre of structure, shape, tannin and freshness. The acquisition of this vineyard site has given him all the permission he needed, it seems. The vines are old and are dry grown on sand-flecked ironstone. We know that Blewitt Springs is responsible for Grenache of great perfume and levity, while also being able to deliver tannins that are gossamer fine yet profuse. It's a special place. So here, we have a wine that is ultra perfumed from the get-go, with ripe strawberries, spices firmly on the \"red\" register of sumac, paprika and a hint of mustard seed, closing with rust and fresh blood. In the mouth, the wine is all silken earth; ferruginous tannins pave the way for a cavalcade of red fruit and a firm, almost tart finish. There is plenty to go on with here, the full package. This is a masterful first release. It's a little lighter and \"redder\" than the Old McDonald. Darker red fruits, as usual, more earthy, with some black spice notes and bergamot tea. Red and black cherry, rosehip, quite floral, if subdued, reds and blues. Deeply savoury and intense, layered, detailed, chiselled, seriously complex. The vintage conditions were a little easier in '24 than '23, with a little more warmth, but this continues the Vanguardist upward trajectory with a theme of transparency, elegance and refined detail. Dehydrated cranberry and goji, barberry, amaro herbs and spicing, dried citrus peel, rye, caraway, pumpernickel, sun-warmed terracotta, pressed wildflowers. A sour-fruited tension to flavour and structure runs through it. It’s a wine that is so captivating on the nose, so intense and layered, that it is almost enough as is. But the palate, the chewy, pithy, silty, sandy tannins, the tamarind acidity, the haunting persistence … Another beautifully beguiling world-class grenache from Mr Corbett. Bravo. The tannins are silky and fine; they build over the course of drinking, through the middle palate, the crescendo and the finish. This is more powerful than I expected, despite what I know of the (in the end, magnificent) 2024 vintage, though the tannins are not as prominent as I expected—no bad thing. This is all about the tannins, as all great Grenache is, and it is the last impression on the palate once the wine is gone. The fruit was handpicked over three different days (10 days apart), with reduced yields from the 2023 vintage. It was made with around two-thirds whole bunches, with a long and slow fermentation over five weeks and matured for 17 months in two 2,200-liter Slavonian oak foudres (seven years old).
